When Rachel Bilson and stylist Nicole Chavez launched footwear e-tailer ShoeMint last November, they definitely weren’t thinking about how they’d celebrate the site’s first year. But time flies.

The ladies hosted an intimate brunch at Laurel Hardware in West Hollywood over the weekend, celebrating the one-year anniversary of ShoeMint. “We are so proud of everything that we create,” Bilson tells PEOPLE. Friends of the design duo, including Bilson’s Hart of Dixie costar Jaime King, Lauren Conrad, makeup artist Amy Nadine and stylists Emily Current and Meritt Elliott, all gathered on the charming patio of the L.A. hot spot to toast the talents.

So just how do the designers keep their creations fresh month after month? “I find design inspiration in street style, magazines and movies,” explains Bilson. “I love to see how people on the street throw things together. I also appreciate the skill and creativity that goes into the work of professional stylists — like Nicole! We have a constant dialogue about what we see that inspires us and what is missing from our closets.”

Bilson, a self-described shoe addict (but a petite size 5!), counts the ‘Melissa’ as her all-time favorite ShoeMint design. “The low-heeled bootie is so chic and versatile,” she says. But a perk of the job is trying every shoe — and sharing the goods with friends and family.

“It’s so nice to have that support,” Bilson says, noting that her mom wears her creations. “I love to see it worn by the people I love!”

ShoeMint threw its first birthday bash last weekend with frontwoman Rachel Bilson and stylist Nicole Chavez. The duo hosted their West Coast friends, including Jaime King, Lauren Conrad, and Emily Current and Meritt Elliott of Current/Elliott at a five-course brunch at West Hollywood hotspot, Laurel Hardware.

Guests sipped champagne, noshed on savory fried chicken sliders and grilled cheese sandwichettes, but most importantly, got a sneak peek at ShoeMint’s holiday collection, launching on Black Friday. Boasting a bevy of metallic, textured, and embellished silhouettes, Chavez explained the aim for their sophomore year, “We love natural earthy stuff, mixed with a bit of rock and Americana.” Highlighting the Zoe-style heel, she continued, “This has the chic pointed toe, but we added spikes.”

Bilson, in a printed silk georgette maxi dress from A.L.C., admitted that she’s a “shoe and bag girl.” Pinpointing the origin of her obsession, she confessed, “It started very early on for me. At 2-years-old, I wouldn’t let my mom dress me. I was very opinionated. At that age, I had to have my jellies. Those were a big deal for a girl growing up in the ’80s.” Now, overseeing her own line, the designer brings to life what’s missing from her closet: “I wear a size five, so it’s really important to make shoes I want to wear, because it’s impossible to find them anywhere otherwise.”

Bilson and Chavez—who first collaborated on Summer Roberts’s wardrobe in The O.C.—claim to share a “fashion brain” and are constantly texting each other images. “If we see a shoe on somebody, or something we like—a color, a fabric—we’ll send it back and forth,” said Chavez. “We always go with our gut. If we’re not into a trend, or if it’s not us, it doesn’t get made.” Their teamwork came into play when they expanded into handbags this past fall.

The three-hour affair culminated with Bilson and Chavez ceremonially cutting the ShoeMint birthday cake, toasting to another year.

When it comes to fashion, Rachel Bilson and her “Hart of Dixie” character Dr. Zoe Hart have one cardinal rule: Don’t pay too much attention to what other people think about your style.

“All men hate harem pants, but I don’t give a s—t,” she tells omg! from Yahoo!. “They are so comfortable. You get a little room, you know?” And just because guys don’t always dig her look doesn’t mean she’s going to stop wearing one of her favorite wardrobe staples. Similarly, her character Zoe — a New York City surgeon and fashionista who relocated to the small southern enclave of Bluebell, Alabama — still struts down the sidewalk in 6-inch heels despite the disapproving looks from the town’s residents. “They just don’t get [Zoe's style],” notes the actress.

Though the former “O.C.” star, who designs shoes for ShoeMint.com in her spare time, is just as into fashion as her alter ego, she notes that they don’t exactly have the same taste. “We have some similarities, where I am like, ‘Oh my god, I just bought that!’ But, I think [Zoe] is a little bit more professional and a little bit more sophisticated, coming from New York,” she shares. “Coming from Los Angeles, I am a way more casual jeans-kinda girl.”

While her character often takes fashion risks, Bilson says some looks should be left at home — like her biggest fashion pet peeve: the crop top! “You can do the high-waist thing now and have a crop top, and that’s different. But if you do a low-waist jean and you have a crop top — ehhh — you might want to store that.” But like any true purveyor of style, Bilson says you need to be open to anything. “I’m not going to say ‘that’s hideous’ because it is fashion and you kind of just have to be all loving.”

So what’s her must-have item for fall? “I always go for the perfect pullover sweater in fall — always a crewneck, never a V-neck — because it can really make an outfit. You just throw it on and it is just really cute.” She adds that the essential piece looks best in autumn colors, because the “deeper colors are just flattering.”

Meanwhile, fans of her hit CW show, which airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, can expect plenty of great outfits this season, and drama in store for our favorite local doc. “We’ve been having fun this season. Zoe is definitely is in a pickle with two boys [Wade and George]. I think people really respond to love triangles. You have your team that you root for. It is really fun and competitive.”

Wondering how Rachel Bilson maintains her supple, flawless skin? We’re told the Hart of Dixie star has recently been turned onto Bath Bar’s Body Balm, an ultra-hydrating lotion packed with aloe vera, safflower, avocado and sweet almond oils.

She’s particulary fond of the Zen Milk scent, a sexy musk with warm notes of floral, vanilla and sugar. How delish does that sound?!

Slathering on the yummy-smelling lotion must be doing something right because Bilson has never looked better.

Emma: Do you have any scoop on Hart of Dixie? Just finished the first season and I’m dying to know whats next, please
We hope you’re caught up on this season because it’s a good one, especially with all the George versus Wade stuff coming up. For the record, Rachel Bilson is a fan of both men for Zoe. “I am totally neutral. The love triangle takes a few different formations, a few different shapes,” she tells us. “There might be a square, because of the love interest for George. There’s a lot to play with.” Bonus scoop: Wilson Bethel will continue to be shirtless. “I think that his costume always is basically half naked,” Bilson laughs. “They really don’t give him clothing anymore.” Thank the TV lords for that.

ampdalejr89: Any good George and Zoe scoop? I’m DYING for something on them. Please and thank you. #hartofdixie
We’d ask you for your definition of good, but who are we kidding? You aren’t going to like this next bit of info, but we’re going to share it anyway! Could Zoe be getting a new love interest? The CW charmer is currently casting the likeable, sexy and charismatic Jonah, a surgeon-in-training who is in town visiting family. While he initially comes off as a little cocky (he is a former fratboy after all), Jonah also has a vulnerable side. So he’s a surgeon, like Zoe, and is a bad boy with a sensitive side? Yeah, Wade and George should definitely be worried, especially when you factor in that Jonah will be sticking around for a bit.
